A Confidence Guide for the Bride Who Hates Having Her Photo Taken

5 min read

If you've ever looked at someone else's wedding photos and thought,

"I could never look like that."

I want you to know something...

Almost every bride I photograph says exactly the same thing, as woman we are basically told from birth what is wrong with us by other people and society. We are told perfection is photo shopped magazine covers and a certain weight, height, eye, color, lip etc.

No matter the size or good looking the bride or groom is, they have their own securities. They may just be different but some are:

They worry about their arms.

They worry about their smile.

They worry they'll look awkward.

They worry they'll ruin their own wedding photos.

But the fact is your friends, family and fiancé are not saying these words:

I love her or him because they lost all the weight

I love them because of how sexy they look in the wedding dress

I love them because of how skinny their arms are

I love them because of how good they look in wedding photos

So am I saying by hearing these words you will have magical confidence definitely not but confidence isn’t always something that you are born with but it is something you can build little by little before your wedding.

Here are a few ways to prepare both mentally and physically so you walk into your wedding feeling calmer, more confident, and ready to enjoy every moment.

Stop Criticizing Yourself Before You Even Begin

Many brides spend months looking in the mirror and pointing out everything they dislike.

Your brain starts believing those thoughts.

Instead, each time you catch yourself thinking something negative, replace it with something kind.

Rather than saying:

"My arms look huge."

Look for something you like about yourself example I have stunning eyes

Try saying:

I love my eye color

Or instead of:

"I'm not photogenic."

Say:

"my confidence is photogenic "

The way you speak to yourself matters.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Pinterest and other Brides

Pinterest is full of professional models, Beauty standard brides, photo shop, Ai, styled shoots, and carefully curated images.

You are not supposed to look like someone else.

Your wedding photographs should look like you.

The most meaningful images aren't perfect they're honest.

And most posed images that look natural still had a prompt of some kind or a client that has relaxation and that wasn’t stressed out about how they look.

Remember Why You're Having Photos Taken

Years from now, you won't be looking at your wedding photographs to see if your tummy looked flat.

You'll be looking to remember how your partner looked at you.

How your dad hugged you.

How your grandmother smiled.

The laughter.

The tears.

The love.

Don't let perfection steal those memories.

Practice Being Comfortable in Front of a Camera

Confidence comes from familiarity and practicing what looks best.

The more often you practice posing for photos and find the least hated position you like of yourself the more confident you will feel and the less intimidating it becomes.

Take a selfie every few days.

Don't delete it immediately and be kind, play in front of the the camera different angles etc and make sure that you give yourself the best chance to look your best, Correct clothing, dress up and dress to what accentuates your body, and if you don’t know that is perfectly fine, we live in a age of google and ai lol, search what works for your body.

Do your hair and makeup, if you don’t wear makeup or know how to do it then don’t compare yourself to a glammed up model with loads of makeup, as we all look very different with makeup on.

Look at Pamela Anderson with and without makeup. If you don’t want makeup then you need to learn to love yourself without makeup.

Simply get used to seeing yourself and start with finding the things you like about yourself.

Learn Which Side You Naturally Prefer

Stand in front of a mirror and slowly turn from side to side.

Your good side is normally the side your hair line naturally falls to. If your hairline is right in the middle normally either side is good and comes down to personal preference.

Notice which angle feels most natural.

There's no right or wrong side but majority of people do prefer a side of their face.

Knowing this can help you feel more relaxed on your wedding day.

Practice Relaxing Your Smile

One of the biggest signs of nerves is a forced smile.

Stand in front of the mirror and think about someone who makes you genuinely laugh.

Watch how your face changes naturally.

That relaxed smile is far more beautiful than trying to smile perfectly.

Watch Your Posture

Good posture isn't about standing stiffly.

Practice this:

  • Roll your shoulders back.

  • Let them relax.

  • Lengthen your neck.

  • Stand tall through your spine.

  • Keep your knees soft.

It instantly creates a graceful, natural look.

Practice Walking Slowly

It sounds silly, but it makes a huge difference.

Put on your wedding shoes if you have them.

Walk slowly across the room.

Imagine walking down the aisle.

Take smaller steps than you normally would.

This creates elegant movement and gives your dress time to flow beautifully.

Learn to Relax Your Hands

Hands often reveal nerves.

Instead of clenching your fingers, practice letting them stay soft.

Hold a flower.

Hold your dress.

Lightly touch your necklace.

Rest one hand over the other.

Relaxed hands make your whole body look relaxed.

Try These Poses at Home

You don't need to memorize poses, but becoming familiar with how your body feels can boost your confidence.

Try these in front of a mirror:

  • Stand with one foot slightly in front of the other.

  • Shift most of your weight onto your back leg.

  • Turn your body about 45 degrees instead of facing straight forward.

  • Keep a little space between your arms and your body.

  • Lengthen your neck by imagining someone is gently lifting you from the top of your head.

  • Drop your shoulders after taking a deep breath.

  • Tilt your chin ever so slightly forward rather than lifting it up.

Notice how these small changes soften your posture without feeling unnatural.

Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Good

Confidence doesn't start in your wedding dress.

If you don’t know what suites you then search on google on what body type you are and what clothes will accentuate your good parts.

Spend time wearing outfits that make you feel beautiful now.

The more comfortable you feel in your own skin before the wedding, the easier it becomes to relax on the day.

Trust Your Photographer

You don't have to remember all of these tips.

That's my job.

I'll guide you through every pose, adjust the tiniest details, and gently direct you so you never have to wonder what to do next.

You don't need to perform.

You don't need to be perfect.

You simply need to show up, breathe, and soak in one of the happiest days of your life.

Because when you feel safe, comfortable, and truly yourself that's when the most beautiful photographs are created.
